Helen’s Closet sleeveless Gilbert shirts revisited

Posted by

I’m so pleased I revisited this pattern, Helen’s Closet Gilbert Top, in time for a trip to Greece.

The Gilbert Top is a button up shirt with a camp-style collar and a relaxed fit. This view, view A, has short sleeves and a tie-front.

I made my previous 2 sleeveless Gilberts a couple of years ago

But I was using iron on interfacing at the time and the collars, especially visible on the white one, went bobbly and I couldn’t wear it anymore. Such a shame with all that work!!

I’ve mentioned before, I’m a complete convert to sew-in interfacing for cuffs, collars and plackets now. And so far, so good.

This is my new white cotton lawn replacement. An exact replica . White cotton lawn from Minerva

I used Helen’s Closet sleeveless hack again and the previously adjusted pattern pieces. It was a really useful blog post and something I’ll use again when converting sleeved to sleeveless.

I kept with the same size, as last time, which Helen recommends is one less than what the chart advises when making a sleeveless version.

The instructions for the pattern and the sleeveless hack are impeccable. The sleeveless hack especially, explains why she does certain things. So you gain knowledge among the way.

I made these 2 at the same time. I’m not entirely sure you actually save any time making 2 at the same time. It must of course save some time but it definitely makes the whole process a lot more monotonous and not actually that pleasurable!

I’m in love with the stripped fabric. I’m not entirely sure what it is. Probably a viscose blend. It was deadstock from Fabworks, rumoured to be Ted Baker. I can’t see it available on the website, but if I see it in store again, I’ll definitely pick more up.

It’s glorious! I’d love an Olya shirt in it. But how many Olya shirts do you need?

I found these rtw off-white palazzo pants in my wardrobe, bought years ago in a sale with the intention of one day fitting into them. So glad I kept them 😂😂

I’ll be able to wear both these new shirts for work on sticky hot days so will get a lot of use out of them.

Ironically we’re leaving the U.K. leaving behind a heatwave! Typical!

Love, Lucie xx

  1. Great holiday tops.
I heard somebody on the car radio yesterday complaining that they were in Gran Canaria with overcast skies and chilly enough to put a coat on while I was driving along in bright sunshine with the aircon going. Hard not to feel smug when it’s such a rare event. I doubt you’ll be reaching for a coat in Greece though – have a wonderful time.

    1. I think the climate is strange everywhere. We’ve had a cool wind here in Greece which has dropped this evening. To be honest it’s perfect weather for us Brits. 22 degrees. You just have to watch out for the uv which is still extremely high.
My daughter is in Tenerife. V cool at night. Takes a while to warm up, then hot. Definitely warmer in the UK 🤣
