My local little gem

Step inside this gem of a place .
Imagine yourself as a child stepping into your first toy shop. This is how I felt first stepping into here.
It is an unassuming looking place from the outside.

Indeed, I have cycled passed here many many times and not even noticed it. I wonder if they could get away with some local yarn bombing to shout out their presence on this busy row of independent shops of delicatessens , bakers, gifts and other necessities in Denby Dale, West Yorkshire, on the road from Wakefield to Holmfirth.
You have to understand, that up until a couple of months ago I thought I did not have access to a decent wool shop in Wakefield. I had been saving my purchases for a quick visit to the  huge fabric, wool and craft emporium that is Abakhan, in Mostyn, North Wales, enroute to my parents. This never proved entirely satisfactory due to the fact I usually had a small person in tow.

Then I discovered a good one that had opened locally here, in Wakefield, over a year ago, hidden down a side street, found through a search on Ravelry.

And then, prompted by a fellow blogger, my quest led me here.

The stock covers everything from Stylecraft and Debbie Bliss  through to ‘designer’ yarns produced locally in Yorkshire,  further afield in Skye (Shilasdair and Elvincraft yarn), and further still Uruguay (Manos Del Uruguay and Malabrigo). Many produced by cooperatives of women using traditional skills.

This barely touches the surface.

AND there is a huge pattern and workshop room.

AND a quilting fabric room.

AND a room put aside to exhibit local artists.

AND also, ‘The Shawl Room’  full of  scarves and shawls, bedcovers, quilts and vintage textiles sourced by the owner from  network of suppliers from women’s co-operatives and family producers in Rajasthan and Gujarat .

Bloggers local to the area may wish to visit their facebook page for details of the many really interesting courses they run throughout the year.

I came away with just this

Malabrigo

some more Malabrigo sock yarn for another crochet lace scarf.

And this

Snowflake felt

snow flake printed felt for which I have the perfect project!

Love, Lucie xx

  1. What a lucky find !!!! Such an Aladdin’s cave of all things wool and fabric. I’m so glad I don’t live in the area otherwise Mr Gertie would be sick of having to take me there every week….

The snowflake felt is gorgeous. Can’t wait to see what you make with it xx
