Sewing the Perfect Boxy Jacket for Flared Jeans

I was in need of a short boxy jacket to wear with my flared jeans.

I’ve made the Stacker Jacket by Papercut Patterns twice before but whilst my Summer Stacker (2022) is still going strong,

I finally had to part with my grey version (2021) this year as the fabric was looking rather tired.

I love how versatile this pattern is in completely different fabrics, resulting in a new garment that is unrecognisable from the first.

However, when browsing in Fabworks before Christmas, something took my eye to take it to a complete other level! Leopard printed velvet. It’s a essentially a furnishing fabric. It has a moleskin like texture to it.

For the most part the sew went well, but it did pose some challenges with the buttonholes! I managed 2 on the pockets but the ones on the button band alluded me. I gave in a just went for a single sewn in popper.

The Stacker is a jacket with a cropped boxy fit with a choice of flapped in-seam pockets or oversized patch pockets. It is fully lined and features a drop shoulder and a classic collar.

I was in between sizes in the bust but again sized down. A size 3 as opposed to a size 4.

Again, I’ve not touched the jacket length from the pattern pieces. I like the boxy fit.

It is fully lined. The instructions are pretty good but you’d need a bit of experience, I think, to completely grasp every step.

I’ve used black lining fabric, again from Fabworks.
Being a furnishing fabric it does retain a lot of structure. However when wearing it with a dress for a winter wedding, I can confirm it doesn’t let the wind through!

The leopard print does limit the occasions that I can wear it, but each time I do, mostly with my dark jeans, it is absolutely perfect for the occasion!!

Love, Lucie xx

  1. All three are keepers in my book! Love, love, love cropped jackets. I plan to make one for spring, although pattern is yet to be determined. I think I’m definitely a fan of big buttons, too! Yours are perfect for your jeans. As usual, well done and thanks for the inspiration. Suzanne (in Japan)
