My daughter was 13 last weekend. I couldn’t let a birthday go by without at least one handmade present.
I’d had this planned for a while. Many of you know that once a month I blog for Minerva Crafts, a huge online (and actual shop in Darwen) fabric, haberdashery and craft emporium, as my part of their ‘bloggers network’. They provide me with fabric of my choice. I make and blog, both here and on their site, and (hopefully) they sell the items required for the make as a handy kit. Back in April I needed to choose my next three Minerva Crafts projects and with Freya’s birthday coming up in May I thought I would take advantage.
My parcel arrived a few weeks ago. This shows the materials for my next three Minerva Projects.
I had chosen this denim and contrasting bright felts to make cushions for Freya’s bed.
There was also an 18inch cushion pad that came with the kit.
Should you like to have a go, here’s how I did it.
I cut out a piece of denim 18 inches by 36 inches. This will make the front of 2 cushions. You should always make your cushion covers 1 inch smaller than your cushion pad to give you a nice plump cushion.
Then using items from around the house I cut circles of various diameters from the felt and laid them out on the denim.
Each felt circle was carefully pinned and then stitched close to the edge in matching thread.
I then cut the denim into 2 pieces 18 inches by 18 inches.
To keep the funky theme on the back of the cushion I inserted a bright red zip, straight down the middle. I made sure not to sew close to the zip to leave a good slash of red exposed.
It was then just a case of a quick sew of the front sections to the back, right sides together.
And here we go!
What do you think?
She loved them.
Love, Lucie x

Just right for a young lady’s bedroom. The zip detail is a bit of fun.
I like the look of the fabric in your Minerva bundle – looking forward to seeing what you make with it.

I love that animal collection. The fabric is fabulous quality. I’m making some fabric storage buckets for a nursery. Lucky we have those two new babies in the family!

Very striking cushions. Not quite what I would make for myself but I can see why your daughter loved them. You make such beautiful things.

Thank you. It was good to work with something bright for a change. I used to stray away from zips but now I’m a zip queen!
