This is where I’ve been been going wrong.

Is this where I have been going wrong?
A friend saw this and thought of me. I’m not sure how I should take that.
Let us address the points one by one.

Advice from a Singer manual

Prepare yourself mentally for sewing. Think about what you are going to do.

I think about sewing a lot. I think about what I need to do next or how to solve a niggly issue. The trouble is that 9 times out of 10 I don’t actually get to sit down and sew. My planned afternoon of sewing will get whittled down to a lowly hour at the end of the weekend. So no, at this point, I am not at all prepared mentally for sewing. I am sewing with a ‘munk-on’, as my daughter would describe it. Cross because my planned afternoon has gone.

Never approach sewing with a sigh or lackadaisically.

Agreed, unless I’m unpicking work I know I could not live with.

Never try to sew with a sink full of dirty dishes or beds unmade.

Thankfully my dirty dishes are hidden in the dishwasher and the birth of the duvet since 1949 has made making the bed a doddle. My husband can even do it – how modern! My daughter, however……..

When there are urgent household chores do these first so your mind is free to enjoy your sewing.

Hah! Then I would never get to sew at all!

When you sew make yourself as attractive as possible.

I go for the ‘natural’ look when sewing.

Put on a clean dress

For ‘dress’ read ‘comfy tracksuit bottoms’ or ‘lounge wear’ if you want to be posh.

Keep a little bag of french chalk at your sewing machine to dust your fingers at intervals.

Not sure what this is for. Maybe to mop up perspiration?

Have your hair in order, powder and lipstick put on.

Hair scraped back. I wouldn’t waste powder and lipstick on anyone indoors. Unless I was taking a selfie for the blog;)

If you are constantly fearful that a visitor might drop in or your husband has come home, you will not look neatly put together, you will not enjoy your sewing.

The only constant fear I have is getting lost in a sewing time warp and then working out how to roast a chicken in half an hour.

Love, Lucie xx

  1. Heehee! The only reason I’d be fearful that a visitor might drop in or my husband might come home while I’m sewing would be that I might have to stop and make a pot of tea or something. I’m not sure what ‘neatly put together’ means but I’m sure I’m not it. As for urgent household chores, I am perfectly able to push these to the back of my mind and usually do 😉

  2. Love it! It’s a wonder anyone ever did any sewing! the only part I have to agree with for me is to approach it with the right attitude. I have to be calm when I sew or it is not pleasant and the results are awful. 😉

  3. Brilliant! But your last comment made me chuckle the most – how to roast a chicken in half an hour! And I bet you can whiz round and tidy up in 15 minutes and make it look like you’ve spent 1/2 a day spring cleaning, I can! 😃

  4. Haha. Yes, I’ve seen this before but love your response! Just today I read an ‘e-joke for sewists’ (sorry – hate that word!) saying the only place housework comes before sewing is in the dictionary!

    1. I saw that too! Mind you with the threads that seem to breed all over the carpets from the top of the house to the bottom I really do think that sewing generates more housework!

  5. Ha ha, I chuckled all the way through this! In an ideal world I would love to think I could achieve all this before sitting down to sew as my mind would definitely be clearer. Reality is though, no sewing would ever get done. If Mr H-L sees me absorbed in something crafty, he knows better than to ask “What’s for supper?” and just gets on with the cooking himself:)

      1. I have to admit it’s usually spag bol if he cooks on the spur of the moment, although it doesn’t smell like that tonight and I haven’t asked yet (I’ve been teaching sewing all day).

  6. I’d never get any sewing done if I had to have a tidy house first! If I’m feeling good I’ll do 2 hours chores so I can sit and sew the rest of the day without feeling a smidge guilty 🙂

  7. This is the sweetest little blog! Found you by searching “Burda 6914” which I’m currently in process at, and can’t wait to explore some more. Love your humor, and I’d never get a thing sewn either!
