These two versions are definitely ‘day’ tops.
After much deliberation, I went up one size. I wanted two practical summer tops I could be comfortable in during the day without holding my stomach in or having to consider which bra to wear. (Unlike the ‘night’ version!)
The thicker jersey made a huge difference to the result of the drape. The yellow one being the thicker of the three.
The fabric? These are both cotton jersey. The gorgeous Kiwi came from my new local sewing shop Benjee Bee in Wakefield. This shop has only been open 4 months and I’ve just seen that she has started to sell on line. She has a small but perfectly formed selection of dress fabrics. What I particularly like about her range is the slight quirkiness to everything. Unique printed cotton, jersey, chiffon and crepe de chine from a unique lady.
The yellow and green floral jersey came courtesy of a £20 gift voucher for Dragon Fly Fabrics I received from winning a giveaway on the veryberryhandmade blog.
I would really recommend a look around the Dragon Fly Fabrics site. They specialise in dressmaking fabrics and have many, many fabrics that I’ve not come across anywhere else. Just nip over and take a look at their huge collection of coloured and printed linen and massive variety of jersey in cotton, viscose and bamboo, prints, plain or striped. A dressmakers paradise.
There is a discount code in this months Love sewing for Dragonfly Fabrics which I’ll definitely be taking advantage of!
Again I used a strip of iron-on stretch interfacing along the bottom before using my twin needle to double stitch the hem. Works every time to prevent a wavy bottom!
I think you can buy this in a strip but I just cut it from a larger piece.
I’m meeting my mum at Abakhan, Mostyn this Saturday so I’m going to look out for some ‘slinky’ jersey with the weight of the kiwi jersey but with a bit of a sheen and probably make it up in a size somewhere in between.

love those tops! It seems a very good pattern if you can make it in so many different fabric weights and colors and they don’t look like the same one over and over. I haven’t done a lot of sewing lately, but I used to have a short sleeved button front shirt pattern that I wore out. I must have made a dozen of those shirts!

Oh my word – with all your skills, you will be able to do those two things easily. Let the sewing machine do the work on the buttonholes. they are amazing. And collars are no harder than sleeves.

This is a great style on you – I love the kiwi fabric. They could be a little bit snugger fitting though, you’ve got a great figure!

With hindsight I should have gone up just half a size. I might yet go back and take them in a little.

Love the summery ones, I think I’ll have to pop over to wakefield when I have time for a proper browse.
My favourite most made pattern last year was the Yasmin Yoke Skirt, also from Maria Denmark. It was like my summer uniform! A light and a dark denim and one in a stretch cotton. Think they’ll be coming out soon again when it warms up!

The shop doesn’t have a huge selection but sometimes I find that best if it’s good stuff.
I’ll go a and have a look at that skirt. Are you tempted by culottes?

Maybe slim fitting ones for golf, but the floaty type wouldn’t suit me, I think I’m too short. Think I’d try some RTW ones on before spending any money on a pattern.

I’m not sure they suited me in the eighties but I wore them anyway! I’ve seen a few nice ones made up on the blogs but trying some on is a good idea.

A great example of how the same pattern can look so different in different materials. I love them all. Roll on summer! Feeling the material is such a big part of buying it. I like buying online but it is just not the same…..
