My mummy’s sewing needle case

Isn’t this lovely liberty print fabric to die for? It reminds me of a day spent with my daughter last summer when we caught a train to London for a tour of Buckingham Palace and made our first visit to the famous Liberty store.
I came back and ran up a sewing needle case.27th January 2014 047 I love to make items that I regularly use with materials that mean things to me. My mum spotted it at Christmas and asked for one of her own so this time I recorded all the steps.

In fact today is her birthday! So if  today is still the 8th February she may be opening this right now!

My original case measured approximately 4 inches by 5 inches.

I measured out a piece of fabric 17 inches by 6 inches, 1/2 inch allowance for seams.

I ironed a piece of medium weight iron-on interfacing across the wrong side of the fabric.

I then measured out my felt. 2 layers of felt 7 inches by 4 inches. I will use my pinking shears along the edges of my felt but find it a lot easier to cut the sides straight first.

Folding my liberty print fabric in half, right sides together, I sewed along the top and the bottom and down the remaining open size, leaving a gap for turning.

I turned my piece the right way around and pressed it with an iron before over stitching around the whole rectangle about 5mm from the edge. This also closed up the hole I left for turning so no hand sewing was required!

Don’t forget to insert a little piece of elastic within the open side before running backwards and forwards with the machine to securely ‘trap’ it.Sewing needle case tutorial

I pinned my felt into the centre and just ran right across with my machine

To finish off, using my cheap letter set (for pennies off amazon) I printed ‘needles’ using a washable textile stamping pad, onto a piece of calico and stitched it into place.

Don’t forget a button!

A lovely useful little make. I hope she likes it!

    1. That was exactly my trouble! I would also end up with lots of bent needles, as I pushed them into the side of the cotton reel after use. It only took me an hour. Exactly the sort of project I like!

    1. Thanks. I love using mine too. And seeing that it is usually left out it’s nice to have something more attractive than just a needle stuck in a cotton reel just waiting for a victim;)

    1. Having been once, we will definitely be going again. It took me ages to choose and then the store girl wrapped my 1/2m of fabric like it was a pearl necklace. A special space.
