Posted by Yay! I’ve finished my first sock.
On and off, it’s taken me about a fortnight.
I had thought that I might use this as a ‘practice sock’ and move straight onto a brand new pair. As I progressed I could see the loose stitches where I had changed between dpns and where I had got better at it. I could see the tension becoming more even, but tighter as I progressed towards the toe.
But having completed it and tried it on I am immensely proud of my first sock and can’t wait to start its mate.
I am going to seek out a pair of cable needles. Ones with a very short loop. I might find these a little faster. Or I might just end up with achy wrists. Anyone tried these?
KnittingSarah’s sock KAL starts very soon. 15th January. I’m off to gather supplies this afternoon. It might be wise to take just a limited amount of cash and leave the debit card at home.

You can try 9″ circulars — I’ve used them and I like them. I know HiyaHiya makes them. You still have to move to dpns for the heel & toe on these, but they make for speedy, ladder-free knitting on the cuff & foot. 🙂 Oh, and YAY! WHEW-HOO! Congratulations on your first sock!!!!

Just picked up some Addi short circular needles (along with some more yarn) but these are nearer 6 inches than 9. We’ll see how we get on.

I have used short 20cm circular needles for all my socks (four pairs inc bed socks) because of the ladders and not liking dpns. You can see what I have to say here – http://rainbowjunkiecorner.wordpress.com/2012/04/18/projects-projects-projects/
I was surprised how easy they were to use and you can knit on the bus! I use straight needles for toe and heel and I find I use a slightly thicker needle for this to get an even tension but that’s maybe just me.
Your sock looks pretty good to me even if you don’t think it’s quite perfect. I make toe up socks and I use short rows for the toe and heel and I know these aren’t perfect but they feel so comfortable. 🙂

What makes the toe up socks more comfortable than the top down method?

Sorry! I think you misunderstood me. I meant that although I feel I am not doing the short rows perfectly and you could see if you look closely the socks are still comfortable. I do toe up socks with short rows because I am rubbish at picking up stitches.

Wow well done! Here I am coming to blog about embarking on socks and here you are having finished your first one! Brilliant, what lovely spring colours and they look so neat and PERFECT from here! Not sure my first ones will be! I have just ordered some cheaper sock yarn and dpns to get started. Can’t wait to see your finished pair!

Good luck on your first pair. It sounds like socks are generally a big favourite at the moment.
It took a bit of figuring out but my book was really good.
I went for moe supplies this afternoon. The lady asked if I was a sock knitter. When I said I had finished my first one, she smiled and said, ‘be careful, sock knitting can become very addictive.’
Better than drugs or alcohol though.

Yes I believe what the woman in the shop said is true! My friend Fiona (she who I call the Sock Queen) has drawers full of home made socks in all colours and styles; she is designing some gorgeous ones for their ‘sock club’ which we are getting to see each week at Knit Night. Each sample gets passed around and oohed and aahed over, stroked and lovingly held to our cheeks ( don’t you find that fresh new yarn just MAKES you do that!) so I have alot of inspiration and alot of expertise to call upon. Socks will be my Thursday night project.

Beautiful sock – you are absolutely right to be proud! 😀 As for the needles – have you ever tried the magic loop method? I hated it at first, but I’m warming to it now. I find you don’t get the same loose stitches as on dpns because (I’m going to explain this badly, but once you try it you’ll see what I mean) the last stitch worked on one needle gets dropped down onto the cable before you start working the next set of stitches, so you can pull it tighter than you could if it was still on a needle. I think I still prefer dpns, but I do either, depending on which needles I have closer to hand at any given moment lol

Just bought some short 20cm circulars. I’ve seen the magic loop method but not tried it. Don’t you have to keep pausing to pull the loop through? How often to you have to do this per round? Does this slow you up?

yes, once, and yes, and that’s exactly why it took me some time to warm up to it… but it has the benefit of being able to do any size loop on it, so you don’t need to change needles when the size of your work changes.

Felicitations on your first sock! I sense a new addiction here. I know your OH isn’t usually into your hand makes but would he wear a pair of lovingly hand made socks? How did he like his scarf btw – or did I miss that post?

The scarf has been worn! ‘It’s a little long.’ He said. Grrrr!
